Senior Travel in Masirah Island

Masirah Island, located off the east coast of Oman, is a small island, about 95 KM long and 12 to 14 KM wide. Still fairly undeveloped, the main attractions here are the undeveloped beaches. Masirah Island is a popular destination for people looking for a surfing and windsurfing destination. It is also home to a golf club, the Turtle Beach Golf Club. Masirah Island is really not a recommend destination for a vacation unless your prime interest is in off-roading, surfing or windsurfing, and generally exploring isolated regions of the Middle East. That doesn't mean Masirah Island shouldn't be a part of your Oman vacation however, as it's picturesque beaches are well worth the trip. It should also be noted that the tourism trade in Oman is expanding steadily, and this island might not always remain the rugged playground it is today.

Getting There

Masirah Island is only reachable by ferry or another form of water-based transport. It is not directly near any of the other major cities in Oman, but the ferry leaves from the port of Shannah. Once you are there it is helpful to have a four-wheel drive vehicle, although the roads on the island have improved. The main stretch of highway on Masirah Island runs along the Northwest coastline, connecting the towns of Hilf, Dawwah and Marsays. For the most part the population of the Island is located on the northern portion of the island, with largest individual town being Dawwah.

Where to Stay

Masirah Island now has four hotels for travelers. They are located in and around Hilf, near to the ferry terminal. First is the Danat Al-Khaleej Hotel, a smaller hotel with 10 rooms available. It has a good atmosphere, but is not particularly luxurious. The Serabis Hotel is a newer addition to the island, and is another small hotel. The staff is multi-lingual, which is nice, and there is an Arabic restaurant in the hotel as well. the Masirah Hotel is the last small hotel on the Island. It is located near the North Jetty. The only upscale hotel on the Island is the Masirah Resort. The Masirah Resort is a hotel in the Swiss-Belhotel chain, and is an indication of the increased interest the tourist trade is showing in the island. With 21 rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, wireless internet and an upscale restaurant, this is definitely a step above the other hotels on the island. If you're looking to relax and enjoy an upscale vacation while still being surrounded by the natural beauty of the Arabian coastline, this might be just the place.
