Beaches in Masirah Island

Edit This
Masirah Island is host to all four of Oman's nesting species of turtles and is one of the few sites where olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are found in the region. Masirah Island also has the world's largest nesting population of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). The other turtles found here are the Green and Hawksbill turtles. The beaches of this island vary from those with fine sand to those with coarse sand. The beaches are enchanting and you can collect some rare sea shells.

Surf Beach

If you are keen on surfing the first spot you should head for is Surf Beach about 20 min east of Hilf. In the summer months the wind blows 30-40 knots almost 24/7. On the western side of the island there is a large sheltered bay that offers great conditions for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Very often, kite and wind surfers from all over the world come to Oman during the summer months to enjoy the high wind conditions on Masirah Island.

Camp on the Smaller Beaches

All the other beaches on Masirah Island are small and unnamed. However, this does not detract from their beauty. To enjoy them fully, take tents along with you and camp on one of the beaches and watch the sun rise and set.

Diving and Snorkeling

Apart from the sun and the sand, you can enjoy diving and snorkeling. Take your own gear or hire it in Muscat as there is not much available on the Island. Take a camera along as well and watch a variety of sea birds that flock to this island. You will also be entranced by the many varieties and shapes of sea shells found on the beaches of this island.

The trip to Masirah Island is a must for the more adventurous traveler who will certainly enjoy what it offers by way of beaches and surfing experience. Apart from the beaches the island also offers inland trekking for those interested in seeing the natural beauty of this very exquisite island to the fullest possible extent. Go in your own four wheel drive and you will be able to experience all the beauty that the island has to offer to the discerning tourist.

You will find that the beaches of Masirah Island are unspoilt and clean. You can watch the turtles come in at night to lay their eggs as they have been doing for centuries now. It is a rare and unforgettable sight.
