The Dead Sea, as the name suggests, is completely devoid of any animal or plant life. The sea, situated in Jordan, spreads towards Israel. It is around 50 miles long and 4 to 12 miles wide at different places. The Dead Sea is created by the water from the Jordan River, and there is no outlet of water from the sea. This place is 400 meters below the sea level; in fact, it is the lowest place on earth. The Dead Sea contains more than 9 times the salt that normal sea water contains per gram. The specific gravity is so high that a normal person will float on the water without swimming. While there are not many Dead Sea Sights, the water itself, and its few surrounding natural wonders, will more than make your trip an unforgettable one.

The Sea

It is believed that the sea was created from the destruction of the old cities Sodom and Gomorra. The area around the sea is very high in oxygen, and the sea and the surrounding rocky mountain creates an image that will never fade from your memory. The most common thing here is to have a float on the sea water and to experience the mud bathing here. Dead Sea mud, known for its healing capabilities, is used for curing many diseases including psoriasis.

Zarqa Ma’een

At Zarqa Ma’een there is a waterfall called Hamamat Ma’in. It is a hot, mineral-rich waterfall situated very close to the sea. The mineral nature is very helpful for therapeutic purposes. The waterfall is used as a natural spa, and is very popular among the visitors.

Bethany

Bethany, located only few kilometers from Dead Sea, is definitely one of the most important places for any Christian, as Jesus is said to have been baptized here by John the Baptist. Apart from its great religious significance, the place is also known for its unique ecological features. The Elijah Hill, with the backdrop of the flora and fauna of the Wadi River basin, offers an excellent sight.

Khirbet al Mukhayat

Not more than a few kilometers from Dead Sea, Khirbet al Mukhayat is located between Mount Nebo and Madaba. This place was at its glorious pick during the Byzantine Civilization, and then slowly went into oblivion. Now it only exists as a very small village. The great colorful mosaics and designs in the old basilica will take you back in time. This small village, with its old broken structures, is sure to evoke emotions and deep thoughts from any visitor.
