Things to do in Aqaba
Edit ThisThere is a long list of Aqaba Things to Do since Aqaba has developed into a global tourist destination, attracting thousands of international visitors, each year. Your Aqaba Things to Do list should consist of exploring Aqaba’s history and its unique ecology. Aqaba’s history is truly enthralling, ranging from its very first, Biblical rulers to the more dominant Roman and Ottoman kings. Aqaba is also regarded as Jordan’s most ecologically-progressive city. You can spend your time in Aqaba:
1. Exploring Aqaba’s Biodiversity
Aqaba is Jordan's most beautifully-landscaped city. It consists of a blended terrain, composed of vast green-covers, desert patches and small, mountain ranges.
Spotting-the-Whales
Aqaba’s most popular reef inhabitant is the whale shark that is known to surface a few times during the daytime. Visitors can be found flocking to the sea-side, waiting to catch a glimpse of this gigantic hunter. Local tourist guides often arrange small trips around the gulf for those interested in watching the whales.
Bird Watching
Jordan is popular as a global, bird-watching destination. The presence of dry woodlands, sea-fronts and mountains have made Jordan a breeding ground for many unique birds. Further, due to its unique location, Aqaba has become host to migratory birds that are headed to Asia, Africa and Europe. Visitors can ask about the prominent bird-watching spots from the local authorities. Most of these spots are marked as IBAs or Important Bird Areas. One of the rarest birds found here is the Arabian warbler.
Visiting Aqaba Marine Park
Aqaba’s coastline consists of an exotic mix of marine life. As a result, water-sports, and particularly deep-sea diving, have become very popular. The Aqaba Marine Park is located near the town center and is among Aqaba’s most popular tourist attractions. The Aqaba Marine Park was started as a conservation effort but now, it has developed into a famous, marine exhibit. Visitors are educated about the marine life through a series of video presentations before being given a ride of the entire premises. Visitors can choose from a wide range of water-adventure sports.
- Location: P.O. Box 2565, Aqaba 77110. Visitors should ask for the ASEZA—Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority. Upon reaching ASEZA, any taxi can be hired to reach the park.
2. Exploring Aqaba’s History
The easiest way of understanding Aqaba’s exceptional history is visiting the Archaeological Museum. The museum has become a conservatory, housing some of the rarest, most historic coins from different parts of Middle East. Some of the exhibits inside the museum date back to the 8th century. Many stones on display here have a religious significance. Most of these sacred exhibits are from the Byzantine era. The museum is perhaps the most dependable resource for understanding the Arab Revolt. However, the most revered exhibit here is the ‘Ayat al-Kursi.’ This is essentially a remnant of the actual spot where the Holy Quran was conceived.
- Location: Inside the Aqaba House, Sherif Hussein Bin-Ali House, near Aqaba Castle. Visitors might find it difficult to recognize the museum. The entire building is actually a part of the Visitor Center and isn't visible from the outside. Visitors need to reach Visitor Center and then ask for the Aqaba House.
