The Kurdish name Hawler is derived from ancient times and may refer to the many historic buildings, castles, and minarets to be found in the city. Arbil has been the center of culture, education and trade in the region, due to its central location at the cross-roads of caravan routes allowing it to serve as a link between trade centers. The climate of Arbil is hot in summer, and cold and snowy in winter. The land is good for growing wheat, barley and cotton, while Arbil province is renowned for its animal husbandry, particularly cattle.
