Church Visits
At the height of the Byzantine Empire, nine churches were built in the Troodos Mountains range. Today, all nine churches are included in the official list of World Heritage sites. The following are the nine renowned churches; Stavros tou Ayiasmati, Panayia tou Araka, Timiou Stavrou at pelendri, Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Panayia Pdithou, Assinou, Ayios Ioannis Lampadistis, Panayia tou Moutoula and lastly, Archangel Michael at Pedhoulas.
Long Walks
Troodos Mountains also offer a fantastic natural sight-seeing surrounding. Walking holidays in the resort of Platres offer wonderful leisure time, as the resort is placed at exactly 1200 meters above sea level. Taking long walks is a highly suggested way to enjoy the natural beauty of the shady pine forest cut by loose surface road tracks, which are formerly used as mule trails and old road routes.
Kykkos Monastery
The world-famous Kykkos Monastery is perhaps the most lavish among all the monasteries in the island nation of Cyprus, and was founded sometime at the end of the 11th century. It is also called the Panagia, as it is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The monastery is known for its museum, which keeps a collection of icons, intricate woodcarvings, manuscripts, and Cypriot antiques that come from the island’s earlier times. One significant icon is ascribed to Saint Luke the Evangelist.
