Festivals in Nicosia
Edit ThisBesides being the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia is also a historically significant city. Nicosia Festivals
provide an excellent opportunity to understand the native cultures and
the historical impressions associated with Nicosia. Some of the most
significant Nicosia festivals include:
Aglandjia Festival
This is one of the rare multi-cultural festivals of Cyprus.
Traditionally celebrated for about three days, it now spans
across several weeks. Usually the festivities carry on for about two
weeks. The festival is celebrated during the late-end of June and the
first week of July. As a part of the festivities, numerous events are
organized. Most of these are themed upon local legends or display
native arts.
Location: Most of the events are arranged in and around the Skali cultural center. Entry is free. Visitors can inquire about the precise timings from the Aglandjia Municipality, near Nicosia.
Rainbow Festival
A unique festival that has a heart-warming motive to it, i.e.
curbing the hatred among people, particularly that of racism. Organized
by a social organization called the KISA, this November festival has
become a major annual event in the social calendar of Nicosia. The
idea is to create harmony among the migrant workers/refugees and the
natives of Nicosia. Some of Cyprus' foreign delegates and government
officials also attend this festival. The festival serves as a perfect
opportunity to get acquainted with the socio-economic fabric of
Nicosia. The emphasis is on promoting social bonding through music and
dance performances.
Location: The festival is traditionally celebrated at
the Eleftheria Square Park. There is an alternate venue that few people
know about - Limassol, near the Molos Waterfront. Entry to the festival
is free.
Pharos Chamber Music Festival
A relatively recent addition, this music festival has quickly gained
global fame. Started in 2001 as an effort to unite music lovers across
the world, it is now counted among Europe's most sought-after music
festivals. It lays an emphasis upon celebrating the recent
discoveries in world music. It is also one of the few music festivals
that showcase chamber music. The concerts are held throughout the day.
Some of the events are also broadcast live on television. Gaining entry
to the Pharos can be very difficult. Visitors are advised to book their
tickets in advance and get acclimatized with the entry-routes.
Location: 24 Demosthenis Severis, Nicosia-1080. The festival is held annually, in May. Visitors can also attend a smaller precursor to this festival called the Ledra Music Soloists Festival, which is organized in April at the PASYDY Auditorium.
