Getting Around in Ashgabat
Edit ThisAlthough Turkmenistan is a relatively poor country on the whole, Ashgabat transportation is reflective of the recent glut in money that the government has received due to oil supplies in the region. The result of this influx of money was that the government spent a great deal of money on city improvements, although the infrastructure of this city remains poor in some areas.
Taxis
One of the most popular modes of transportation is the taxi. Keep an eye out for officially licensed taxis, noted by a certificate in the doorway or on the rear of the dash. Make sure that any driver that you ride with uses the meter, and refuse to negotiate for a fare.
Private Cars
Renting a car in Turkmenistan can be difficult to do because of paperwork, but once you do it is very convenient. In actuality, however, it's unlikely that you'll need any vehicle of your own in this area, as the area around Ashgabat is almost entirely desert and undrivable.
On Foot
Some parts of Turkmenistan's Ashgabat can be accessed on foot. One benefit of walking through the city is that you will get to see certain sights that you'd otherwise miss out on. However, be careful about walking through dangerous areas and late at night, and always have a partner with you.
If you have any particular questions about how to get to a certain site or attraction, speak with a local or a representative from your hotel or place of accommodation for additional advice and information.
