Ust-Kamenogorsk is the capital city in the Eastern Kazakhstan Region, and there are many ethnic Ust-Kamenogorsk festivals and festivals of the region to attend. Following is some information on the festivals that might be fun to attend.

Nauryz

This international holiday is symbolic of the New Year. It doubles as the symbol of peace and unity. During these festivities, horse races, hand to hand combat, song and dance competitions and more exciting activities take place. Lasting one full month, it begins on March 21st. In addition to being celebrated here in Ust-Kamenogorsk and in the rest of Kazakhstan, it is also celebrated in Iran and Afghanistan.

Unity Day

Unity Day takes place on May 1st. It is the Kazakhstan people’s unity day. Its purpose is to celebrate the social achievements of labor, as well as the economic benefits. Children love this holiday because there are various competitions for children of the labor class to participate in. Commonly, organized rallies and protests are also held in the streets by labor unions.

Id al-Fitr

Known as  Eid al-Fitr in other places, or Festival of Fast- Breaking, it is a celebration of Muslims in the area. It commemorates the day that ends Ramadan, a month long religious fast during which Muslims cannot eat from sunrise to sunset. During Id al-Fitr, Kazkh Muslims call on each other, handing out treats such as various kinds of deep fried doughnuts to celebrate.

International Women’s Day

This is an international holiday, taking place on March 8th, that Kazakhstan participates in. It is a day for both men and women to celebrate women having the right to do things like vote, hold public office, and have the same economic opportunities as men.

Christmas

This religious holiday, traditionally celebrated on the 25th of December, is celebrated on the 7th of January here, and Santa does not visit on the same day. He visits on New Year’s because of the old communist roots of the country. Any trees and decorations for Christmas can be expected to be seen around New Years instead of in December.
