Day Trips in Ust-KamenogorskEdit This
Here are some Ust-Kamenogorsk Day Trips. The area surrounding Ust-Kamenogorsk is a barren mining land, but those who are willing to explore can find some interesting things.
Ust-Kamenogorsk is a mining city, so the best place for a day trip would be to the direct outskirts of the city itself, where the mines are located. The town produces non-ferrous materials such as silver, copper and zinc, as well as the radioactive uranium. This is the main income of most families in the city, so it would not be a problem looking for a guide – although it is a big problem looking for someone who actually speaks English as most of the people here speak Russian. The best way to head out to the mines is by means of a four wheel drive vehicle, as some of these places are located in rocky and mountainous areas that are accessible only by the large trucks that ferry workers up every morning. The real objective of the visit is not to see the actual mining works, but to take a look at the conditions of the mines, many of which do not live up to the necessary safety standards. With the help of a translator, speak to some of these people, some of whom have gone through the toughest of times in the Soviet-occupied period.
The Highest Lock in the World
Found just about a 40-minute drive away from the main city center of Ust-Kamenogorsk, the Ust-Kamenogorsk Lock is located in the town of Ablaketka. With a drop of more than 40 meters, the Lock is the highest lock in the world, on par with the Three Gorges Lock in China. The Lock is a sign of the progress in such a remote area in Kazakhstan. Recognizing the need for electrical generators in the town for the purposes of mining and industrial works, the Kazakh government built a hydroelectric dam in Ust-Kamenogorsk, fueled by the water in the Irtysh River that flows through the Eastern Kazakhstan Province. The dam itself is a good place to visit for a keener knowledge about how the industries are important to Ust-Kamenogorsk, but it is also surrounded by a myriad of plants and flowers that are a rare sight in a town such as this. A day trip to the Lock provides a reprieve from the concrete jungle and industrial town that Ust-Kamenogorsk is, and provides a the perfect insight into the lifestyles of the people living there.
