There are many tour operators and tour companies in South America offering all types of activities, ranging from multisport to cultural expeditions. Many shoestring travelers prefer to do things on their own, which sometimes is the best way to go -- but many times they miss out on unique attractions that could have easily been pointed out by a local expert.

South American tours should be oriented to enhancing the experience of the traveler.  Hotel and cruise bookings are easier by the root supplier's website.  But guided treks, mountain biking, family stays, jungle expeditions and other off-the-path tours are best done in company of local experts.
