1. Museu del Oro, Calle 16 number 5 to 41
Home to the
largest collection of Pre-Colombian gold in the world, this
family-friendly museum is a must-see for any visitor to Bogota. The
intricate gold works made using early tools will astound, and there is
also an extensive collection of other archeaologial treasures such as
pottery and textiles.
2. Monserrate
A
cable car and funicular railway transport whisk visitors to the peak of
this towering mountain to the east of Central Bogota. Kids will love
the dizzying ascent to the top, and the views across the Colombian
capital are impressive. A church, snack bars and even a reconstruction
of a Bogota street circa the1880s can be found at the top, making this
a good place to spend at least a half day.
3. La Candalaria
Bogota’s historic district is jam-packed
with museums, galleries, impressive churches and handsome colonial
homes. Many of the sights can be visited free of charge, and the
winding cobbled streets lead to impressive buildings on every corner.
Highlights include Plaza Bolivar, with what is said to be South
America’s earliest statue of liberator Simon Bolivar. There are plenty
of good places to eat here for any budget, and many backpacker hostels
are located in the historic neighborhood. Watch your valuables and take
taxis after dark.
4. Zona Rosa Nightlife
Bogota has a reputation for some
of the most sophisticated nightlife in South America, and discerning
nightowls make their way to the upscale Zona Rosa district when they
want to party the night away. From chic pavement bars and gourmet
dining to pumping nightclubs, this is the place to see and be seen on a
trip to Bogota. Although this is a largely safe neighborhood, be sure
to take taxis at night.
5. Parque de la Independencia, Calle 26, Central Bogota
This attractive park with its well-maintained gardens and tree-lined walkways is a great spot to relax during a sightseeing tour of Bogota. The neo-classical design by Italian architect Pietro Cantini makes the Quiosco de la Luz, the park’s café, an appealing place to take in the atmosphere, while the park’s small planetarium will appeal to even the youngest members of the family. There are frequent live music performances in the park, from rock to classical.
