The Rakai district is located in southern Uganda, near Lake Victoria. It is a cripplingly poor area, and is home to Kukuuto hospital, the same hospital where the first confirmed case of AIDS was reported in Africa. Many of the schools in the surrounding areas were populated with orphans, students who lost both parents to AIDS.
