Edit ThisWhen traveling to Tunis, a game plan ensures that you get the best of the best when traveling through northern Africa. Having an itinerary is always a plus to make sure you get the most out of your vacation, filling it with activities that are culturally diverse as well as exciting.
#1 - A trip to the Roman Ruins
The Roman Ruins in the ancient city of Carthage are just on the outskirts of Tunis. Built in 814 BC, these ruins were once part of one of the most successful Roman metropolis of the era. You can visit the Roman Village, Roman Amphitheater and Antonin Baths which were once the largest of the Roman Baths. This is a visit you will not want to miss, however make sure you dress lightly as this is an archaeological adventure in the desert.
#2 - Visit The Bardo
Holding the most extensive mosaic collection in the world is the Bardo Museum. The Bardo not only is home to ancient mosaics from all over Tunisia but also statues from Punic times. Open every day but Monday, the museum itself is an architectural landmark, seeing the building alone is worth the visit.
#3 - Shopping in The Souks
The most popular form of shopping in Tunis is a trip through the Souks. An extremely large outdoor market, the Souks are a collection of stalls and shops that make up a huge area on the outskirts of Tunis. Selling anything from woodcrafts and rugs to pottery and local art, a trip through the alleyways of vendors is not one you will want to miss.
#4 - Ichkeul National Park
Home to hundreds of thousands of migratory birds and nearly two hundred bird species, the Ichkeul National Park is situated on over twelve thousand hectares. If nature interests you and your family, a visit to this park is a must.
#5 - Trip to Douz
Situated on the outskirts of Tunis, Douz is known to locals as the "gateway to the Sahara." Home to massive sand dunes, a local market on Thursdays and periodic cultural festivals throughout the year, Douz is a great place to experience the culture of Tunisia. Now offering tourist attractions such as ATV rentals and camel rides, this is a great place to visit with the whole family as it is very kid friendly.
