Shopping in Sousse

Edit This

Sousse is not only best known for its beaches but also for its great finds when you do some real time Sousse shopping. “The Pearl of the Sahel,” as it is called, is home to Roman and Punic archeological finds. Though these are not necessarily for sale, you can find and buy other exotic items that range from art, handicrafts, carpets and other items that will always remind you of your wonderful stay in Sousse.

Country Market

This is a weekly market along the Medina where you can just find about anything that is sold in Sousse. Here you can bargain with the seller to bring the price down to something more acceptable to both of you. It is actually where you get to practice your haggling and bartering skills. The Medina, being the center of the city, is a labyrinth of streets with small shops you want to go around to. You can purchase must-have items when in Sousse, such as silver jewelry that have cross primitive and modern designs, pottery and ceramics that are exquisitely hand-painted, brass and copper items such as trays, teapots that have intricate engravings on them, leather hats, book covers made from a master leather maker, embroidered wall hangings with intricate patterns and antiques such as ancient coins and women's clothes.

Soula Shopping Center

This is a big shopping center that has four floors in it. The Soula Shopping Center is located just outside the Medina where you can haggle for prices. However, here you won't be able to haggle as prices are fixed. The shopping center is a great place to pick up some locally crafted items and gifts. Credit cards can be used for payment at this shopping center.

Magasin General

If you are a wine lover, then this is the best place you should head to as it offers a good and wide selection of Tunisian wine. Other items here are furniture and house appliances.

Monoprix Supermarket

This is the place where you can get basic supplies and other basic items. It is a chain supermarket owned by a French national. They have reasonable good prices and even sell cheap stamps at 600 Dinars each.

Weekend Market

Apart from the weekly country market, there is also a weekend market that can be found at the northwest of Sousse City Center about five km away. The market is held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Don't be surprised to find stuffed camels there though with all the other items for sale.
