Boy entering Tamberma Castle

Wendy Cuijpers

While driving through the Tamberma region, you come along the strangest buildings. They look like castles with turrets on all four corners, but are made of mud. They are the houses of the Tamberma people, and have been built this way so they could resist the slave hunters a long time ago. The four turrets are not really turrets but enormous storage tanks. The whole family lives there, and voodoo is still very alive.

Some families will show you around in exchange for food and drinks.
You will probably need to hire somebody to take you there, as they are still some 15 km away from Kante and you will need somebody who speaks the local language and knows the people.
