When to Go in Dar es salaamEdit This
Dar es Salaam is not a particularly hot tourist destination in Tanzania. Most visitors just travel through the area on their way to the safari circuit or Zanzibar. However, recent efforts have been made to revitalize the area, such as building luxury hotels and making it an exciting, new port of call on the Indian Ocean for Silverseas Cruises. Luckily, there is still not a huge tourist season that would be necessary to avoid when planning your vacation to Dar es Salaam. The climate can be pleasant or uncomfortable depending of which time of year you decide to visit. The town basically has two seasons, the rainy season, divided into the short rainy season and the long rainy season, and the dry season--both seasons being quite humid, with average temperatures staying in the 70s and 80s (Fahrenheit) all year long. Some months have short bouts of rain, while others have heavy rain showers, while even others are bone dry.
The Dry Season
If you're thinking of traveling to Dar es Salaam during the dry season, from September to March, you might want to rethink your decision. The extremely humid air and high temperatures can be oppressive and force you to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day. Sunblock is not a choice during the dry season, it is a necessity to avoid serious burns from the intense, African sun. Although this time of year is not the ideal time to go, there are still plenty of activities to do indoors and outdoors, such as going scuba diving, or visiting the National Museum and checking out the fossils, historical photos, and sculptures.
The Rainy Season
The mild, short rainy season is from the end of October to the beginning of December, and the long rainy season, or Monsoon Season, is from March to June. Temperatures are cooler, although still just as humid, and much better for outdoor activities and explorations on foot, like visiting the Karlakoo Market. The rainiest months are April and May, so it's best to avoid traveling at that time, if you don't want outside adventures to be canceled or postponed. The best time for a vacation in Dar es Salaam is anytime from June until September, the period of time right after the heaviest part of monsoon season. Being right after the rainy season means that temperatures will remain lower, meaning in the 70s, and the rain will subside.
