Roodeplaat
Nearby Pretoria is the home of Roodeplaat, a nature reserve and dam. There are over 250 species of birds in this reserve along with zebra, impala, wildebeest, and other wild life. The dam is a popular site for fishing and camping. There is a wonderful hiking trail that will take you take you through the most beautiful countryside in South Africa.
National Zoological Gardens of South
In Pretoria there is the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa established in 1899. Here they breed endangered species including white rhino and Arabian Oryx. There is an aquarium and a reptile park in the gardens and a primate and carnivore section. Also in Pretoria is the Voortrekker Monument that memorializes the Battle of Blood River in 1838.
Suikerbosran Nature Reserve
Nearby is the Suikerbosran Nature Reserve, which is also near the airport. This reserve is 115 square kilometers and has hiking trails but it might be better traveled by mountain bike. There is a museum and visitor's center on the site.
Magaliesburg
Visit the nearby village of Magaliesburg by steam train called the Magaliesburg Express. It goes from Park Station to the Magaliesburg Country Hotel. During the weekend the town is a jumping place for families and individuals alike. There are hiking and rock climbing opportunities and you can rent mountain bikes and go out on the countryside.
Sun City
Two hours out of Johannesburg is Sun City, a popular resort featuring the Lost City and Valley of the Waves. There are artificial beaches, volcanoes, and the ever present slot machines.
Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site
The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is an absolute must do while in the area. This is a dozen or so limestone caves which were coral reefs 2.3 billion years ago. The Wonder Cave is a 60 meter chasm that is 1.5 million years old. Many hominid fossils have been found in the area.
Cullinan
Take a 45 minute drive to Cullinan to see the mining town where the largest diamond every to be found had its beginning. This diamond is part of the current crown jewels in England. The town has tried to keep the turn of the century charm.
Make sure to take the time to see these areas outside of Johannesburg and take in the ambiance of the area.
