Like any big city, Cape Town has plenty of choice if you want to eat out. You can buy a quick snack, like mieliepap at a street corner, or go for something more substantial in one of the many restaurants. You can choose from restaurants in many nationalities, but it's certainly worthwile to try the Cape cuisine. There are many delicious seafood dishes, like crayfish, snook, or the huge perlemoen (abalone). The Malays (in the past often the cooks for the white people) have had a great impact on the food in South Africa in general and the Cape in special. Try the waterblommetjiesbredie (a stew with water lillies) or the bobotie (spicy mince meat). Wash it all down with a good glass of south african wine.

Many Cape Town Restaurants have contributed to making Cape Town among the most sough-after culinary destinations in South Africa. These restaurants serve everything from the native (South African) fare to the most exotic of Mediterranean and Asian delicacies. This is primarily because South Africa boasts of small regional populations belonging to various ethnic groups and the resulting, culinary influences are apparent in Cape Town’s varied gastronomic offerings.

Many of the native, Cape Malay dishes have a distinct Asian flavoring since South Africa was one of British India’s leading trading centers. Harbour House

The cuisine is essentially Mediterranean and the food is renowned for its freshness, being sourced from the nearby harbors. In fact, Harbour House has its own fishing boats to ensure that the seafood is among freshest in Cape Town. The ambiance is uncomplicated with one side of seating arrangement giving a beautiful view of the ocean-front.

La Colombe

Address: along the Spaanchmat River Road, near Constantia Winelands, Constantia 7806
Hours: 12.30 pm to 2.30 p.m. and 07.30 p.m. to 09.30 p.m.

La Colombe is counted among the topmost specialty restaurants in Cape Town. The cuisine is typically French and so is this restaurant’s decor. The restaurant is uniquely located, nestled between massive oaks that are a common occurrence in the wetlands of Constantia. The preparations are seasonal to ensure the freshness.

Cafe Royale

Address: 273, Long Street 8001
Hours: Monday to Saturday, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The name may bear resemblance to a James Bond flick but this isn’t the restaurant’s only connection with the movies. This is among the most exclusive eating places in Cape Town, known to host Hollywood celebrities. However, more than being a nice specialty-restaurant, it is more of a luxurious but casually-decorated burger joint, known to serve more than 30 kinds of burgers.

Perseverance Tavern

Address: 83 Buitenkant Street Gardens
Hours: Daily, except Sundays

If anyone wants to taste what authentic South African food tastes like, the Perseverance Tavern is the place to visit. Often referred to as the ‘Tavern,’ it is housed among the oldest structures in Cape Town. The building housing the tavern is counted among the heritage buildings lining Buitenkant Street. This isn’t a typical restaurant but more of an embellished diner-cum-pub where local bands play throughout the day. The ambiance is very relaxed and the regulars can be seen lounging, wearing trainers and jeans. The menu includes native specialties like fried Calamari and Trinchado (a saucy, beef preparation).
