Mountain Gorillas

Edit This

In Northern Rwanda, you can hike and find beautiful gorillas. You can spend an hour with the gorillas and although expensive, it's definitely worth it.  They are amazing.

Nyungwe Forest

Edit This

Head South to Nyungwe Forest, between Gikongoro and Cyangugu.  You can get guided walks of varying length, though some require real fitness!  The forest is home to Colobus monkeys, Chimpanzees and many other species.  Even if you don't get to see any, the forest is still well worth a visit.

Murambi Genocide Memorial

Edit This

One of the most disturbing of the genocide memorials, you will leave this place sick to the stomach at what we in the West stood back and let happen in 1994.  It is off a track near Gikongoro town centre in the south, and can be reached by vehicle or on bicycle taxi.  People will point you in the right direction as they are used to tourists going that way.

Bodies have been removed from mass graves, preserved and put on show in the classrooms of an old technical school where tens of thousands were massacred.  It is a chilling eye-opener for the tourist and more..

Akagera National Park

Edit This

Head East from Kigali to find one of the cheapest and less well-known wildlife parks of East Africa.   Not quite the big five, but if you're lucky and go early in the day, you could see Elephants, Hippo, Zebra, Giraffe, Antelope, Baboon, etc.  Worth a visit in dry season.

Ntarama Genocide Memorial

Edit This

Ntarama Genocide Memorial, just 20 minutes away from the Nyamata memorial, is also worth visiting. Like the Nyamata memorial, this site was a church before the genocide, and was nationalized to serve as a memorial after thousands of people were killed within its walls. The church itself is similar to Nyamata, with victims' clothing and remains visible to offer proof of what happened there, but Ntarama also has a peaceful memorial garden and wall of names in the back of its compound. Ask the resident guide for a tour in English or French, and more..

Nyamata Genocide Memorial

Edit This

Nyamata Genocide Memorial is a worthwhile complement to the Gisozi Memorial Centre in Kigali. Located in the town of Nyamata, 40 minutes south of Kigali on a newly paved road, the memorial is located in a church where over 5000 people were killed during the 1994 genocide. Visitors take a short tour and see the evidence of the genocide that remains there today - victims' clothing piled on benches, the roof pockmarked with bullet holes, and the open crypts behind the church that hold the remains of over 40,000 people from the area. An extremely more..
