Museums in Ibadan
Edit ThisFascinating Museums of Ibadan
One of the best ways to explore the history and culture of Nigeria is to visit the Ibadan museums that hold an array of priceless historical artifacts. The premier museum in Ibadan is the Museum of National Unity. This museum is classified into four distinct galleries: the Unity Gallery, Masquerade Gallery, Pottery Gallery and Yoruba Gallery.
Unity and Yorba GalleriesThe Unity Gallery is a compilation of a wide variety of Musical Instruments from all over Nigeria. The objects consist of drums, gongs, rattles and several types of xylophones. These drums have interesting stories attached to them. Joko-tofofo, a cylindrical drum, is believed to treat impotence. This section of the museum has another unique attraction, which is a drum which reportedly helps an older woman to find a husband.
The Yorba Gallery gives insight into the nation's transitory past, faith and the numerous archaeological findings. Some of the exhibited items include uniquely carved door panels and hangings and the single-headed drum known as Ogboni.
Pottery and Masquerade GalleriesThe Pottery Gallery displays a unique collection of ceramic vessels that served different purposes. The objects displayed here are a clear indication of the workmanship that existed around 3,000 years ago. Some of the exhibits include a Kula, which keeps things cool, bowl-shaped pots used for preparing food and punctured pots which were probably used as strainers.
The Masquerade Gallery is dedicated to various departed spirits that are an integral part of Nigeria. This segment of the Museum also displays a wide range of exotic masks and several musical devices.
