Edit ThisGrande Mosquee
Edit ThisThe Grande Mosquee is a good starting point to explore the Birnin quarter. The building probably dates from the 19-th century.

Sultan's Palace
Edit ThisThe Sultan's Palace dates from the 19-th century and is still very much in use. People from town and neighbouring villages come here to ask (legally binding) advice on marrigae, inheritance etc. If you are in need for advice yourself, it is possible to arrange an appointment with the Sultan through the any of the guides.

Birnin Quarter
Edit ThisThe Birnin quarter is southeast of the modern city. It has some of the finest examples of traditional Hausa architecture, some even better than you'll find in Kano (Nigeria). There is also an old French Foreign Legion fort, and there are some quiet and peaceful gardens you can visit.

Zengou Quarter
Edit ThisThe Zengou Quarter does not have the architectural beauties of the Birnin, but it makes up for that in liveliness. There are a lot of things going down here between the simple mudbrick houses.
