History in Volubilis

Edit This
Volubilis was the Roman Capital of Mauritania. It was an important economical base for the Romans because this region was big in olive oil, as it still is.

The roman garisson left in 285 AD and after that day the town slowly degraded. Latin was still spoken here when the Arabs came in th 8-th century and the town still had a mixture of Greek, Syrian, Jewish and Berber population. People continued to live here until Moulay Ismailneeded all the marble he could get.
