Biking in Morocco

I been going to Marrakech every year for the last 25 years – many times going more than once per year. The pink colored walled city has been my second home while living in US, Belgium, Hong Kong and now Mumbai.  How to describe the magic of the city – the living throbbing 1000 year history of the medina and the Djemaa el Fna, the fusion of old and new in the many 5 star resorts and restaurants that have been popping up like mushrooms over the last few years.  The special part for me is that each time I visit I see some different something amazing and something that I have never seen in any part of the world.  About 5 or 6 years back I brought a road bike to Marrakech and started to explore the city by bike, smelling the smell feeling the flow of the city.  I then started to venture on tours within a 30 mile radius and a few years back took the ride up into the Ourika valley in the early morning.  Nothing could compare to the flat sun coming up over the valley.  I had been many times by car but this was something really special.  Two years back I started looking for bike tours to try my hand at mountain biking in my second home.  The feeling of passing through goat trails – right through the middle of little Berber villages that cars do not reach, the green rich smell of the fresh mountain air … I was hooked.  My last few visits each time I have taken one or two tours in the mountains.  I have tried others but my favorite is definitely Argan Xtreme Sports – you can find them at www.argansports.com.  It is owned by Moroccan/American’s who have returned to their roots in Marrakech to open the business.  Their guides speak English, French are native to the Atlas Mountain area so can show a unique insightful view each time we set off.  I would highly recommend a trip to Marrakech and if you ever though to bike in Morocco – I would very much encourage you to get out and see the Atlas Mountains!
