Accommodations

Hotels in the area average around $80 a night, but you can find some that charge more or less. The majority of the hotels provide you with a clean room to sleep in and restaurants to eat in, but you can find others that have a lot more to offer. What each hotel has to offer varies based on where the hotel is located, but one thing that almost every hotel has is a swimming pool.

Things to Do

In Merzouga one of the most exciting things to do is to go camel trekking. Camel trekking allows you to tour the desert on the back of a camel, which is something that you don’t want to miss. If camel trekking doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you can enjoy a desert tour in an all-terrain vehicle. Two recommended tours are the Dunes Expedition and the Marrakech Expedition. There are also museums and historic villages that you can tour for some cooler indoor activities.

Eating Out

In Merzouga there are not very many places to eat, because most people eat their meals at the hotel. However, there are a few restaurants located around town that you can check out. While in Merzouga you will need to visit SAHARA at least once to try the Berber Pizza, which is a huge loaf of bread that is filled with a variety of vegetables, meats, spices, and eggs.

Getting There and Getting Around

There are no airports in Merzouga, so to get there you will have to travel by car. If you are coming from Rissani there is a nice paved road that you can follow into town, but coming from anywhere else you will need a great map and a 4WD vehicle. You can also reach Merzouga by taxi. Once inside the city, the only way to get around is by foot, but the town is small enough that is easy to walk wherever you are going.

Attractions

The best attraction that the city has to offer is Erg Chebbi, which everybody will find enjoyable, especially families with children. This attraction offers you the chance to see the desert in all of its glory, including the various colors of the desert. You can also check out Dayet Srji, which is a salt lake that is located on the outskirts of town.
