Mombasa Internet Cafes are few in number, but very good. Although it is an old settlement in Africa, the area is still sparsely developed. Many of the locals walk around in native Islamic garb. The area is extremely laid back and relaxing.

Development of Internet in Africa

The Internet has still not fully penetrated the Dark Continent. Compared to the rest of the world, it is relatively sparse. The number of ISP registered users, overall number of hosts and IXP traffic show that Africa is relatively behind the times in digital expansion. The highest amount of Internet activities and the greatest infrastructure are concentrated in South Africa, Morocco and Egypt. One of the main issues is the fact that available bandwidth is extremely scarce. Internet traffic has to go through high priced satellite links, since there are so few cable connections. In 2007, Africa had only about 1,000,000 broadband subscribers. Although Mombasa is a developing city, it is still behind the times in terms of internet usage and internet cafes. If you must keep in touch with the rest of the world while you are enjoying the great beaches of Mombasa there are a few cafes that offer internet service.

Online Cafe

Online Café is located just off of Moi Avenue. It is open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. There are six computers for your use. They also have a printer and scanner. If you get hungry, snacks and sodas are available for a fee.

Blue Room

Another Internet café is located inside of a restaurant known as the Blue Room. This restaurant is located off of Haile Selassie and Digo roads. Although it is a bit pricier than others in the area, there is a great chance you will have a good Internet connection. The building is also air-conditioned, which is a big plus. You can eat and surf at the same time.  They offer CD copying, scanning, printing, typesetting and copying. They will also transfer pictures from your digital camera.

Clicks NetCafe

Located off of Superior Hse Makadara road in Mombasa is Clicks Café. This Internet café only has 3 computers available. This little café is set up for video conferencing if you need to schedule a meeting while you are here. It also offers snacks and drinks for a fee.

There may not be an Internet cafe on every corner, but these three should be able to fulfill all of your Internet requirements.
