7 Day Itinerary in Mombasa

Edit This

7 days is a perfect amount of time to explore Mombasa and its environs. Check out this 7-day itinerary so that you can make the most out of your adventure of a lifetime to Kenya.

Day 1: Arrive and Get Settled

Arrive via train or airplane, find your hotel and get settled in. Get acquainted with the city and stroll through the Old Town to get a feel for the city. Sign up for a charted dinner cruise in an Arab dhow, where you can have some stunning views of the city and enjoy a world class meal.

Day 2: Local Culture

Start your day off with a trip to Ft Jesus, the city’s largest museum and attraction. Built in 1593 by the Portuguese, this storied fort now has daily tours that offer a glimpse into prison cells and torture rooms for slaves before they were traded. The adjoining museum gives a nice overview of the fort’s role throughout the city’s history. Enjoy lunch and head over to Old Town to walk through Mombasa’s varied architecture, which tells the stories of its history with its strong European, Arab and African influences. Hire a guide to really get the most out of your experience.

Day 3: Beach Day

Hit one of the local beaches and enjoy a day of fun in the sun. Both Bamburi Beach and Nyali Beach are within a short distance from Mombasa, and are the best beaches in the area. Relax on the beach and soak up some sun or spend your day enjoying some of the watersports available such as snorkeling, scuba diving and water skiing. Eat near the beaches at one of the many cafes and street stands for lunch, try one of the resorts for dinner and be sure to stick around for sunset on the beach.

Day 4: Safari Day Trip

Use this day to visit a nearby safari and see close up the breathtaking African wildlife. Located within easy driving distance for a day trip, both the Shimba Hills National Reserve and the Tsavo East and West National Park have large wildlife communities of elephants, leopards, lions and giraffes. No trip to Kenya is complete without a wildlife excursion and this should not be missed. Book a tour through your hotel or local travel agency.

Day 5: Culture and Beach

Head north to Malinda today and combine a day of culture with the beach. Check out the Gedi Ruins just south of Malinda, where you can stop and see the ancient lost civilization’s ruins. Then head to the Malinda beach to spend some time snorkeling on the beautiful reefs here. Book a trip to the Malinda Marine Park to enjoy some really amazing views of ocean life.

Day 6: Shopping and Beach

Spend some time at the shops along Moi Avenue and Nyerere Street where you can find many traditional handicrafts like woven baskets, carvings and clothing. Return to one of your favorite beaches in the afternoon for a final swim, snorkel or just a relaxing afternoon.

Day 7: Return Home

Eat breakfast in Mombasa one last time and head to the airport or train station to head home.
