First place to check is the Pensao Central on Avenida Amilcar Cabral. Clean romms (with shared toilets howewer) are available at a 10000 CFA price. It's conveniently located just a few meters away from the Pidjiguiti port (central port) where the ferry leaves each friday (at hours depending on the tide) to Bubaque (return Sunday)

If it is full, just a block away behind the neighbouring church, you'll find the Monte Carlo aparthotel.  Don't really know the rates, but there seemmed to cater for backpackers when I was there (Feb 2004). In front you'll have the grande hotel which seems to cater for chinese sailors and their escorts.

If all of these are full, check the Casino (also two blocks away the Pensao Central) which seems to rent noisy rooms at 5000 CFA a night. Doubles also as a brothel.

The Ta Mar located in the old central town of Bissao, has disgusting rooms, and must be considered in a sleep or die situation.
