When to Go in Luxor

Edit This
For those of you who love the sun, Luxor is the perfect place to visit. The yearly cloud coverage only amounts to a few days, and rain is practically non-existent. Throughout the year the weather is hot, sunny and dry. However, there are still differences in the seasons that should be considered when making your plans.

Winter is the most popular time to visit Luxor. From September to April the temperature is cooler, averaging 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Winter is the time to visit if you plan to do any high-energy activities such as biking or trekking. It’s also the best time of year for those traveling with family, as the summer heat can be too intense for young children. Keep in mind, however, that winter mornings can often develop a mist that adds humidity. This dissipates after a few hours, and can create spectacular effects with the sunrise.

If you plan to travel in the summer, be sure to carry plenty of water at all times. Temperatures can reach above 40 degrees C between June and August. This can be acceptable if you don’t plan to do any strenuous activities, and is paradise for adventure travelers that love extremes. Remember, though, that temperatures are often recorded in the shade, and it can be very difficult to find your way out of the midday sun. For budget travelers, the summer can be easy on the wallet, as Luxor takes part in Egypt’s month-long Shopping and Tourism Festival starting in mid-July, during which prices of hotels, shops and restaurants can be slashed by 10 to 50 percent.

Regardless of what time of year you travel, the heat is unlikely to interfere with your site-seeing plans. Just be prepared with light-fabric clothing that protects your skin from direct sunlight, high SPF sunscreen, a good pair of sunglasses and plenty of water. But you may want to avoid traveling to Luxor in April, when sandstorms that last up to a few days can produce winds up to 95 mph. and cause temperatures to climb more than 20 degrees C within a few hours.
