Top 5 Must Do's in Luxor

If you are planning a trip to Egypt, no visit is complete without a stop in Luxor. Luxor is located in southern Egypt and the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. Make sure to bring comfortable shoes, light clothing if visiting in the summer months. Here are my Top 5 Must Do's in Luxor (in no particular order).

Finances and weather permitting, I must say this is a TO DO you will not surely forget. See the historic sites of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings from the air, not for the faint of heart or someone with fear of heights. An added highlight, if available, is traveling across the Nile in the early hours of the morning and watching the sunrise over the Valley of the Kings.

Feel free to do this on your own, but I recommend taking a guided tour to get a true grasp of the history. Visit the Temples of Karnak, and then walk along the Avenue of the Sphinx to enter the complex. Some of the oldest ruins here are over 3000 years old! Walk through the Great Court and view the towering 134 columns, quite impressive, and in the rear you will find the sacred lake. The Luxor Temple is joined to the Temples of Karnak by roughly a mile and half walk along the Avenue of Sphinx.

One of the most important archaeological sites in the world, the Valley of the Kings is not to be missed. Also referred to as ancient Thebes, this vast area is littered with a honeycomb of tombs. Again, feel free to do this on your own, but I would advise taking a guided tour so you actually get some knowledge of what you are looking at. Also on the West Bank you will find the Tombs of Nobles, and the Valley of Queens.

First of all, the museum is air conditioned! And second of all, its home to many rare and historical artifacts. The pieces here are displayed wonderfully, allowing maximum viewing pleasure, and everything is labeled in English which is very helpful. If you like mummies, this is the place to go! The entrance fee is a little on the expensive side, and the facade is not so inviting, but rest assured, you will be impressed.

Deir el Medina is a small valley on the western slope of the Theban Mountain, where the artisans and craftsmen of Luxor lived. These were the people who built all the amazing tombs you see scattered over Luxor. Deir el Medina is also known as the Monastery of the town. The images and colors of the tombs here are amazing and the bright colored paintings are breathtaking.
