Giza

Once you've seen your fill of the Pyramids of Giza you can begin to make your way around the surrounding sites. These can all be done within a day, though you may want to take a few days to explore Alexandria or to make the round trip to the Baharia Oasis (see below).

Saqqara is an excellent start to your day trips. Here you can see the Step Pyramid built by Imhotep, the first pyramid ever constructed in Egypt.  Also worth visiting are the Pyramids of Teti, Pepi and Unas, and the Tomb of Mereruka, with hieroglyphs covering every wall. To enter the site of Saqqara will cost you approximately 60LE. Be sure to bring a flashlight to explore the sarcophagus in Mereruka.

To continue with the evolution of the pyramid you can next stop at Dahshur, site of the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. Small children will have to be helped with the steep paths, and it may be advisable to bring a cloth to tie around their noses and mouths to help block the acrid smell of ammonia that permeates the pyramids. To explore these sites will cost you about 30LE.

Near these two sites is the ancient city of Memphis. Here you can see the ruins of the ancient city as they are being unearthed. You can also visit the Memphis Museum with the Colossus of Ramses and the Alabaster Sphinx. Entrance to this open-air museum is 21LE.

There are also many trips into Cairo that can be organized into separate day trips. One day can be spent discovering Islamic Cairo, with stops at the Alabaster Mosque, the Sultan Hassan Mosque, and the Al-Azhar Mosque. There is a 12LE fee to enter the Sultan Hassan, and keep in mind that you will have to remove your shoes, for which there is a holding fee at the entrance. Women will be given robes to cover up. You can finish your tour of Islamic Cairo with a stop at the Khan el-Khalili market, a vast market area that has been around since 1382.

You can spend another day touring Coptic Cairo. Here you can see the Hanging Church and, directly behind it, the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Of further interest is Abu Serga, which was built on the grounds where the Holy Family was thought to have rested during the flight from Egypt. These sites are free of charge, but donations are always appreciated.

You can easily make a day trip from Giza to Alexandria to see the fort that was built upon the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, as well as the aquarium and the famous Library of Alexandria. Many trains go between Cairo and Alexandria between 4:40 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. with returns possible between 6 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. The trip takes approximately 3 hours and costs 30LE to 40LE each way.

If you're looking for a bit more adventure you can head out to the Baharia Oasis and travel through the White Desert and the Black Desert, both spectacular displays of nature. You can also see the English Castle, a site that's very popular for its fabulous sunsets. The bus to Baharia leaves at 7 and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and costs 35LE each way.

Perhaps the best way to arrange any of these day trips is through companies such as Viator or Ramses Tours. They can also be arranged through your hotel. Using these methods can save you both money and hassle as entrance fees are included (and often cheaper through tour guides) and transportation is provided. Day tours generally run between 20USD and 70USD.
