Things to do in Cairo
Edit This1. The Pyramids
No journey to Cairo is complete without a tour of the Pyramids. While the area is overcrowded and seemingly overdone, you have to see these "wonders of the world" in person. The light show at night is spectacular, bringing a modern feel to the ancient beauty of the area, and is also affordable. For around $20 you can gain access to a number of areas.
2. The Sphinx
The sphinx is one of the most famous monuments in all of Egypt. Although you have seen pictures before, they do not do any justice to what the Sphinx looks like in person. While it is also filled with tourists, a trip to Cairo would not be complete without viewing this guard of the Giza Plateau.
3. The Egyptian Museum
Even if you do not have all day to commit to touring this museum you should definitely take the time to view King Tut and the awe inspiring amounts of treasure within the museum. Keep in mind that there are mass amounts of security guards and police protecting the fortunes, and they often frown on picture taking. It is better to just leave your camera tucked away.
4. Kahn Ali-Kalili
Khan Ali-Kalili is the biggest open market in all of Cairo and is sure to please even the most avid shopper. The stores here have been owned and operated by the same people for centuries, making it almost like taking a trip back in time. Exotic spices, perfumes, souvenirs, and jewelry are scattered all around. You are sure to find a hidden gem by putting your bartering skills to the test as the labeled prices here mean nothing.
5. Bab Zuweila Gate
The Sayyidna al-Hussein Mosque is one of the most sacred spots in all of Egypt. While the mosque is an attraction in and of itself, you should take the opportunity to head south and locate the busy street market. Not only is the market full of delightful finds, but you will come across the gate of Bab Zuweila. This gate is the only gate that is left from the wall that used to border the south of the old city. It is a reminder of what happened here and gives insight into the culture that surrounds Cairo.

Horse riding
Edit Thisphoto by: dody
Another trade mark of Cairo is to go horse-back riding in the desert. If you take a left on Pyramids Road, about one kilometer before you reach the Pyramids, the same way you would go to the Sound and Light Show, you’ll find a large number of stables with foreign names to attract tourists. i.e. “AB Stables” and “EuroStables”. Many of the stables have really badly kept horses and will mob tourists trying to persuade them to ride their horses. However, there are also a couple of good stables (Karim at FB Stables is recommended), where foreigners living in more..

Sailing
Edit ThisFelucca down the Nile
When in Cairo, you’re bound to notice 'feluccas' sailing up and down the Nile with their huge white sails. A 'felucca' is an ancient Egyptian traditional sailing boat. In the old days they were used for both transport and trade. Today, sailing trips on feluccas are reserved for tourism and entertainment. You can get a group together and rent one for 30LE an hour. You’ll find boarding places nearby the Meridian Garden City Hotel and the Helnan Shepard Hotel. These feluccas are interesting because they sail throughhout the waters in the heart of Cairo and the scenery can be more..

Desert Trips
Edit ThisVarious travel agents in Cairo organize jeep safaris into the desert, where you can escape the immense noise pollution of Cairo and at the same time enjoy the silence and mystical beauty of the desert. If you’re not part of a tour, you’ll need to access a 4x4 in order to explore the desert. A nice excursion would be to take horses from one of the stables (mentioned on this page as well) and have a barbecue in the desert or maybe even spend the night there. The people at the stables can give you all the details about it. Spending a night out in the desert is an experience you more..
