Day Trips in Alexandria

If you're staying in Alexandria and have exhausted the extensive supply of things to do, there are plenty of day trips that will occupy your time. Here are a few places that ensure a good trip with fascinating things to see.
Rosetta
Only 65 kilometers to the east lies Rosetta, the city that became famous after the discovery of the Rosetta Stone that cracked the Egyptian code. While the stone is now in England, there are plenty of other things to see. The town square is serene and pretty with decorative cannons dotting the area. There are plenty of gardens and orchards around, but the biggest draw is the houses. Rosetta has become an open-air museum as people wander in to see the fabulous architecture.
Tanta
Located 120 kilometers south of Alexandria is the university town of Tanta. This city is famous for its textiles, as there are numerous cotton factories around. Wander the markets to find some of the best examples. There are a few Coptic churches worth seeing, but the biggest tourist spot is the Great Mosque of Tanta. It's a beautiful structure and makes Tanta well worth the trip from Alexandria.
Giza
The Great Pyramids of Giza can be reached fairly easily, as Giza lies only 180 kilometers away from Alexandria. If you're in Egypt, it's impossible not to find a way to see this wonder. Once you arrive, trade in your car for a camel and head into the desert to see the Great Pyramids, the Queens' Pyramids, the Sphinx and the myriad of tombs.
Cairo
The capital of Egypt is only 220 kilometers from Alexandria and is a must-see destination for anyone in Egypt. Tour Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo to see the mosques and churches. The Citadel is a favorite spot of many tourists, as is the opera house. Of course, you can't miss the Egyptian Museum, and a trip into the Khan el-Khalili market is also a must do.
Damietta
This port city is located about 225 kilometers east of Alexandria. Here you can sample some white Dammiat cheese and search the markets for antiques and furniture. Be sure to pick up some textiles as well, as they are rapidly becoming hard to find. Most important, stop at the Amr Ibn Al-a'as Mosque, the second mosque ever built in Egypt.
