One of the stunning islands of the Cape Verde archipelago, Sao Vicente is located 600 miles off the coast of West Africa. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation on sandy beaches, this flat volcanic island is a wonderful location to visit. Known both for cultural attractions and as a great place for water sport aficionados, the island has something for everyone.

Sao Vicente Highlights

Sao Vicente has a wide appeal as a tourist destination. The great beaches make it a perfect family vacation spot and the water sports attract sport enthusiasts from around the world. It also is a popular location for couples, as the setting is beautiful and romantic. Sao Vicente boasts many cultural and historical sites to visit.

One of the best and safest beaches on the island is Baia das Gatas, a lagoon on the northeast end of the island. This natural swimming pool is calm and sheltered from the ocean, making it a great spot to learn water sports. San Pedro beach is a popular beach for wind and speed surfing. Many of the waters around the island are dangerous for swimming and sports, so you should stick with the beaches that are recommended and always take the advice of locals in this area before entering the water.

To enjoy the scenery and get some exercise, there are many walking trails around the island that make exploring Sao Vicente on foot, bike or horseback possible. For golf fans, there are several courses to choose from on the island. There are a number of retailers on the island selling crafts and souvenirs, including wooden carvings and jewelry.

Eating & Drinking on Sao Vicente

Food choices on Sao Vicente are mainly a mixture of Creole and Portuguese food. Most of the choices here are fish-based, with lobster, tuna and octopus being popular menu items. Many restaurants also serve international cuisine. Be sure to try the local beverage grouge, an alcoholic drink made from locally grown sugar cane.

Nightlife on Sao Vicente is rather low key most of the year, with the exception of February carnival and a music festival in August. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs but it is not known as a big party spot. Evenings are generally spent around the bay watching the sun go down over the ocean.

Sao Vicente’s weather is warm all year round, making it an ideal vacation spot. August to October is the rainy season, with the most rain falling in September. November to July is dry and windy and the ideal time for visiting.

If you are interested in a relaxing, laid back trip, Sao Vicente is a great place to visit.
