Santiago island was first settled among the Cape Verdean islands, and it is still the major island of Cape Verde with about 240,000 inhabitants (half the population of the country). Attractions on the island include
Praia the laid back capital of the country, Cidade Velha the oldest settlement of the country and the beaches of
Tarrafal.
The inland is rugged and mountainous and great for hiking.
