Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta and it is found
in Botswana. This was part of an ancient lake that dried up. This
area is noted for its variety of wildlife. You will probably want to
spend most of your time here in one of the camps or on safari. Here is
a list of places to go during your visit to the Okabango Delta. They
are all close enough to travel to and from in a days time!
Maun
Maun is probably the most developed city in the Okavango Delta. It has shopping centers and hotels and most of the safaris into the Delta start here. Often local tribesmen come to sell cattle and you may see an antelope grazing on the side of the street. Outside of Maun is the Crocodile Farm and a Game Sanctuary where you can safely walk the trails and do some animal and bird watching.
Gaborone
Gaborone is the most modern city near the Okavango Delta. Here you
will find shopping malls, restaurants 4 star hotels, and night clubs. The National Museum and Art Gallery is a good place to visit presenting
traditional crafts and paintings by regional artists. There is a
little shop there where you can purchase local wares from artists in
the area. While you are here a visit to Gchwilhaba or Drotsky’s Caves
is worth the while. These caves are in an isolated area and can only be reached with a 4x4 off road vehicle. The caves offer linked passages and one cave is even two levels! There are many bats in the caverns but they are harmless. The
rock formations in the cave are interesting, colorful and beautiful. Do be fooled by their outside appearances, you will be amazed at the size of these formations
The Moremi Game Reserve
The Moremi Game Reserve is in the delta. It is best visited during the dry season from July to October. During this time you will see many animals cluster around the lakes in the reserve. It is possible to see all kinds of wildlife including lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, giraffe and the African wild dog. Make sure to use a guide for your own safety.
Serowe
In Serowe there is a Rhino Park where you can see all types of
animals. There is also a modern restaurant and bar that serves good food.
The Okavango Delta area is probably one of the most unique areas in
the world for seeing interesting wildlife and having a unique vacation.
